Flexible Pricing: A new hope

Fixed vs flexible pricing trilogy: Part 1
Sometime in 2010, we made the decision to move away from fixed price projects to billing based on actual time spent. This came primarily after talking to various web designers about how they handle this topic. “World of pain” was the phrase used by Tim Van Damne. All of them emphatically encouraged us in no uncertain terms to leave behind the fixed price quotes and embrace estimates with hourly billing based on actual time spent.
So we switched.
By and large this has worked out well for us. Equally so, and perhaps more importantly, it’s meant our clients have better websites too.
But then recently we were asked by a client to give a fixed price quote on some work. Having not been there for some time, it gave us reason to revisit this, to discuss internally why we would recommend a more flexible project process and decide how to move on from there.
